Coefficient of friction

Printer FriendlyTell a Friend
The coefficient of friction is the ratio of the frictional force to the force acting perpendicular to the two surfaces in contact. This force is usually gravitational. This coefficient is a measure of the difficulty with which the surface of one material will slide over an other material.
The static or starting coefficient of friction is related to the force required to begin movement of one of the material.
The kinetic or sliding coefficient of friction is related to the force measured during the movement.
