Industrial application - Torsion test on hand tools

Customer Need and challenge

tournevisANDILOG collaborated with a big name of hand tools' manufacturer for the automotive market to supply a torque measuring solution. The challenge was to provide a torsion test bench which is able to efficiently characterize the torsion withstand by screwdriver blades during normal uses.

Hand tools, i.e. screwdrivers, are designed and constructed to withstand screwings/unscrewings torque without deformation or patent defects. The goal was to control the defined performances and specifications of each screwdriver’s type during R&D stages, as well as auditing the mass production process.


ANDILOG Solution

ANDILOG supplied a motorized and automated torsion test bench which is able to cover a large torque range from 0.4Nm to 40Nm, thus making it possible for a wide range of hand-tools to be evaluated.



The DRIVETWIST, torsion test bench, combined with the CALIFORT software allows a fully automated test protocol. A pass/fail analysis is performed, based on the torque results when a pre-defined angle has been applied to the hand tool by the torsion test bench DRIVETWIST.

The CALIFORT software commands the torsion test bench and saves the results to meet the requirement of a fully traceable history. It also enables the user to save testing reports for future references. .

ANDILOG’s customer is now able to characterize the mechanical properties in torsion (the torsion yield strength and modulus of rupture) and define the type of torsion failures. By performing torsion test on different samples with the DRIVETWIST, the following measurements are done:

  • the breaking torque values and the maximum torque that the screwdriver blade can support, in order to validate the hand-tool specifications

  • the torque versus angle results and so audit the manufacturing process.


ANDILOG Products

The DRIVETWIST is a compact motorized torsion testing machine, which is fully automated thanks to the command & data acquisition CALIFORT software.

The test bench frame is made of rigid and high precision linear guides, which carry the high accuracy  strain head (which measures the twisting moment of torque) and the motor head (the twisting head which apply the twisting moment to the specimen). Equipped with two platens which come with pre-drilled holes, it can accommodate a large choice of sample’s fixtures.

The CALIFORT software commands the tester, and offers valuable features to configure the testing parameters and to analyze the acquisitions.

How it works

  • The specimen fits between the strain head and the torque motorized platform.

  • The motor applies the twisting moment at a constant rate to the specimen and the strain head measure the torque. The angular displacement (or degree of rotation) is measure by the encoder.

  • Direct reading of torque and angle is available on the digital reader.

  • The software allows complete tester control along with the acquisition and analysis of the torsional test data and allows to determine the material behaviour in torsion loading.
